What One Year Travelling Taught Us

The year began with selling everything we own, saying our goodbyes and moving to Canada.

We didn’t know what to expect but we knew that this would be the start of a very exciting adventure. From working at a bar in Vancouver to a resort in Muskoka to living in a cult for a week to taking a road trip from NYC to Miami to travelling Cuba I guess you can say we’ve had many opportunities to learn a thing or two.

So, what has one year travelling taught us?

1. Never expect your plans to stay the same

Throughout our trip it was made very clear to us that plans never quite go the way you think they will. We began our trip with the intention of spending two years in Canada; nine months in and we are now travelling South America, which is something we never imagined before.

We believe that a key for your growth is to stay open minded and always ready to take on new adventures, even if it drifts away from the original plan. Never be afraid to take on new opportunities along the way that might not have been expected.

2. Allow yourself to be free from materialistic needs

When reducing all of your possessions down to a simple backpack and travelling different parts of the world that lack everyday needs, you really come to understand what little materialistic needs we actually require. We can get so caught up in what we have and need that we forget to just enjoy life and be content with what we already have.

Every step of the way we have downsized again and again, allowing us to not grow attached to material items and to live a simpler life. Appreciate where you come from, what you do have and where you are. Take our word for it, it is much easier than you think and helps makes life even more enjoyable.

3. Take joy in every moment

With each new day comes new obstacles and challenges. If we learn to appreciate each one as an opportunity to grow and better ourselves, learn from the people around us and be present, it then creates more value in every day. There’s no need to stress about tomorrow or yesterday, simply enjoy the now and see it for what it is worth.

Allow your whole being to take joy in the moment, look around and observe, remind yourself of where you are and be grateful. The people, places and things around you are always there to teach you something.

4. Be comfortable with who you are

Living with strangers for an extended period of time and being in a new hostel every few days, you really come to learn that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about you. The more true you are to yourself, the more likely you are going to draw like minded people to you.

Never be afraid to show all the different aspects of who you are, even when those around you might be complete strangers. Being comfortable with who you are is going to reward you with soul connections that you will keep for life. Never be afraid to let your light shine.

Take a look back through your year and write down how you’ve grown, what lessons you’ve learnt and how you plan to make 2019 even better.

You are exactly where you need to be for where you want to go

The year 2018 has been a whirlwind of highs, lows and unexpected surprises. It never ceases to amaze us that everything really does happen for a reason even if we aren’t aware of the benefits in the moment. We are so thankful for what an amazing journey 2018 has taken us on and cannot wait for the surprises that 2019 holds.

We always like to hear from our OWN family so don’t hold back from getting in touch as we’d love to hear what you’ve all been learning this year!
